Google PROXX from Google Chrome Labs
Working with Google Chrome Labs, as part of Tokyo Wolf, we helped create PROXX - a pretty addictive Minesweeper-inspired game for the latest Chrome browser.

Overview
Tokyo Digital partnered with Google Chrome Labs to develop PROXX, a space-themed game inspired by Minesweeper and built to showcase the capabilities of the latest Google Chrome. The project demonstrated our ability to create web applications that perform smoothly across a wide range of devices and platforms. PROXX was unveiled at Google’s I/O Conference in 2019 and is accessible on any browser, including those on feature phones.
Challenge
The goal was to reimagine a familiar game in a way that highlighted modern web technology, while ensuring it remained accessible and inclusive. The game had to work flawlessly across all devices and support multiple input types—mouse, keyboard, d-pad, and screen readers—without compromising performance or experience. The technical complexity lay in delivering high performance, full compatibility, and inclusive design in one cohesive package.

Solution
We built PROXX using Preact for UI components, PostCSS for styling, Comlink for managing web workers, and Rollup for bundling. This stack allowed us to optimise for speed, compatibility, and maintainability. The game immerses players in a space mission where they use a proximity scanner to detect black holes and protect their crew. Hosted on Netlify, PROXX is open-source, with its TypeScript code available on GitHub at github.com/GoogleChromeLabs/proxx. The project reflects our approach to inclusive design and our commitment to performance without compromise.
